This is a much loved museum with extensive permanent displays on local history and a lively temporary events and exhibition programme. The museum is proud to be family friendly and was long listed for The Telegraph's Family Friendly Museum Award 2012.The museum is located in the heart of Tiverton, right next to the Beck's Square short stay car park, the bus station and only a few minutes from the long stay carpark.
Grand Western Canal
The Grand Western Canal Country Park and Local Nature Reserve meanders through beautiful mid-Devon countryside and quiet villages between Tiverton and Lowdwells (near the Somerset border). Extending for eleven and a quarter miles, the Country Park provides a wonderful location to enjoy a peaceful walk or cycle ride along the towpath; experience a ride onboard the much-loved horse-drawn barge that has been taking passengers for trips along the canal since 1974; have a go at fishing; launch your own boat or hire a boat or a canoe.
Discover Knightshayes, a gothic Victorian mansion set in the heart of the rolling mid Devon countryside. There’s plenty to see from looming gargoyles, imaginative carvings including the ‘seven deadly sins’ and the medieval great hall complete with minstrel’s gallery. Take a look around our exhibition dedicated to the extraordinary career of Joyce Wethered, the last family member to live at Knightshayes and the “greatest lady golfer of all time”. Explore the Walled Garden, now restored to its former glory and used to grow organic produce for the stables restaurant and nearby town market. Watch the gardeners planting and harvesting fruit and vegetables or say hello to our free range chickens. Stretch your legs and explore our famous grounds, ablaze with colour in the spring and autumn. From parkland walks, to the colourful formal terraces, elaborate topiary and woodland garden, there is something for everyone.
Tiverton Canal Company
Tiverton Canal Co is a small, privately owned, family run, Mid Devon Canal Tourist Attraction, and is home to the Last Horse-Drawn Barge in the West Country, also The Ducks Ditty Cafe Bar and a great selection of Hire Boats. This canal attraction operates on the beautiful Grand Western Canal, often referred to as the Tiverton Canal, by locals and visitors alike. The company, originally named The Grand Western Horseboat Co, was established in July 1974 by Tony Stockwell. In 1985 the company was purchased by Pat & Ray Brind moving to Devon from Newbury in Berkshire. In 2006 Philip (son of Pat & Ray) and Jacquie (Phil's wife) took the reins, changing the name to Tiverton Canal Co. . Now together with their much valued staff, are proud to continue the tradition of Horse-Drawn Barges in Devon, now one of the very last of its kind in the UK.
Devon Badger Watch
When you arrive at Devon Badger Watch . . . keep a look out as you drive in, you may be lucky enough to see many exciting birds and mammals. Buzzard, sparrow hawk, kestrel, bullfinch, swallow, goldfinch, roe deer, red deer, fox, hare and rabbit all share this secluded habitat with us. We'll meet you in our visitor centre in the old barn where you can enjoy a leisurely look around our informative display panels which will provide you with some useful information about badgers. You'll receive a friendly welcome from Anne or Kevin, the owners, and a short introduction that will include what to do and what not to do in order to get the most enjoyment from your visit. Toilet facilities are available should they be needed before we set out.
During our walk to the hide, some 450 metres through the fields, you will be enchanted by the beautiful scenery, the bluebell wood (seen at it's best in May) and the hazel coppice. It is here, as we pass through the coppice, that we will look for signs of the dormice, now sadly rare in much of the UK, and at the many wild flowers indiginous to the area. Whilst in the woods and hide, watch out for woodmice, squirrel, woodpecker, nuthatch, tawny owl and little owl too. photo © Devon Badger Watch photo © Devon Badger Watch We don't want to frighten the badgers away!
Once we are comfortably seated inside the hide we watch as the badgers emerge to feed just a few feet away. Remember, from our hide we can view the animals above ground at eye level. Because we watch the badgers very quietly, they usually come up above ground very early in the evening. This means that most watches take place mainly in daylight. It is only in the early spring and late autumn that we have tous artifical lighting.
