Blue Cross Tiverton was opened in 1985 and is now one of the largest centres. Located in central Devon, it serves a wide base of the local community, covering Tiverton, Exeter, Crediton, Cullompton, Wellington, Taunton, Barnstaple and North Devon with a large rural catchment area between. The site operates from a former commercial boarding kennels and food manufacturing plant.

Its prime function is the intake, rehabilitation and re-integration of both cats and dogs into society. Construction work in 1990 built a new kennel block holding 32 kennels, and 16 cat units as well as an isolation unit for both cats and dogs. In 1999 a further isolation block was built, accommodating 14 cat units for nursing mums and kittens and new arrivals, as well as a puppy/dog isolation unit with three kennels.

In our early years, welfare problems faced by the many working horses in London were of particular concern to us. Then, in the Great War of 1914-1918, The Blue Cross helped to relieve the suffering of the horses used at the front, and, during the Second World War (1939-1945), the charity provided refuge to animals made homeless by the Blitz.

In addition to our animal hospitals, we also have 11 animal adoption centres spread throughout the UK that rehome the animals The Blue Cross has in its care. Our animal adoption service makes great pains to ensure that our animals are matched to owners that are right for them.

The Blue Cross understands the importance of the bond between a companion animal and its owner and the deep feelings of loss that result when this bond is broken. Our Pet Bereavement Support Service tries to help people through this difficult time and the Pet Memorial service offer a lasting tribute to pets who have passed on.
