Grand Western Canal

Things to Do Index

The Grand Western Canal offers a variety of coarse fishing within some of Devon's most attractive countryside. Beginning at The Basin in Tiverton, there is a large head of Slab Bream as well as some double figure Carp and good Tench. Favoured methods include fishmeal pellet and paste during the summer, and bread punch throughout the year.

Several sections of the canal have been dredged in previous years. This has greatly improved the fishery, in particular the areas between Tidcombe Bridge and Manley Bridge, where large bags of Roach, Rudd, and Skimmers are now available on the bread punch.

The average depth of the Grand Western Canal is around four feet, with deeper areas at Greenway Bridge near Halberton. This section is just less than seven feet deep and offers some of the best fishing on the canal. Hard-fighting Tench to over 6lb can be tempted with several methods, including caster, corn and beds of ground bait. Chopped worm works exceptionally well for the Tench as well as the bigger Perch, which grow to over 1lb. This section is also home to large Skimmers and the odd big Bream.

Some excellent yet unpredictable fishing is available towards Sampford Peverell and Burlescombe. These are the sections that also offer the larger Tench, Bream and some ferocious double-figure Pike.

Tiverton and District Angling Association control this outstanding fishery. The club hosts regular friendly club matches, as well as competitive open matches. Throughout the summer, tuition is available for those who wish to learn more about the sport. Day or annual permits are required to fish the canal (see below). The only section of the canal where fishing is not permitted is the stretch between Fossend Bridge and Lowdswells.

However, sensitive area restrictions apply to the section between Sampford Peverell Bridge and the farmers bridge by Rock Bridge. Angling is not permitted in this area between 1st April and 30th June. This is to protect the populations of Reed and Sedge Warblers that breed along the canal.

There are also a number of disabled fishing platforms. These can be found at Crownhill Bridge, Tiverton Road Bridge, Greenway Bridge and Ebear Bridge.

Permits are available from:
