Two Moors Way in Devon

Running for just over 100 miles between Ivybridge in the south and Lynmouth in the north, this famous path links the two National Parks of Dartmoor and Exmoor. The route covers a wonderful diversity of scenery; from Ivybridge it passes through a wild and remote
stretch of Dartmoor and on to some of the most beautiful sections of the Dart Valley. It then climbs again to cross high moorland and past the last castle to be built in England - the early 20th century (NT) Castle Drogo. Then comes a section which is more suitable for the less experienced walker, covering some delightfully unspoilt parts of central Devon, linking Dartmoor with Exmoor. Then on to Exmoor and some delightful river valley scenery, with magnificent views from the high moorland. The end of the path leads to the pretty twin towns of Lynton and Lynmouth, overlooking the Bristol Channel. Walking is easy with just one or two challenging stretches and the route is comprehensively waymarked, apart from the open moorland sections which require navigational skills. The trail can be accessed by bus and/or train routes to allow for short lengths to be walked. The route passes through: Chagford; Witheridge; Ivybridge; Lynton; Lynmouth; Dartmoor; Exmoor. The route links with the following trails: Tarka Trail; South West Coast Path; Little Dart Ridge and Valley Walk; Taw-Teign Link; Dartmoor Way; Devonshire Heartland Way.

Two Moors Way (West Anstey - Lynmouth)
Distance: 29 miles Difficulty: Moderate/Hard End points: West Anstey (Grid Ref SS853274) Lynmouth (Grid Ref SS724495)

Entering Exmoor, the Way descends to cross the River Barle at the famous beauty spot of Tarr Steps. The valley of the river is then followed through the villages of Withypool and Simonsbath, the lush wooded valley gradually becoming more moorland in its character. The Way then crosses an area of high moorland, passing the source of the River Exe on its way. The final length, high above the deep wooded valleys converging on Lynmouth, is a truly spectacular finale to the walk, views encompassing not only moorland and valleys, but the twin towns of Lynton and Lynmouth, one seemingly perched on top of the other, and the sea beyond. West Anstey - Withypool; 10 miles Withypool - Simonsbath; 7 miles Simonsbath - Lynmouth; 12 miles

Two Moors Way (Ivybridge - Drewsteignton)
Distance: 38 miles Difficulty: Moderate/Hard End points: Ivybridge (Grid Ref SX635560) Drewsteignton (Grid Ref SX736908)

The Way climbs onto Dartmoor following an old mineral tramway; views back over South Devon to the sea are impressive. Moving then into the heart of the moor, a long lonely stretch follows where for almost 10 miles there is no habitation, let alone facilities. Then follows the beautiful valley of the River Dart, the ridge above the famous village of Widecombe-in-the-Moor, a prehistoric stone village at Grimspound and the spectacular Teign Gorge, crowned by the 20th century Castle Drogo, before the moor is left at Drewsteignton. This is a walk never to be forgotten. Ivybridge - Holne; 15 miles Holne - Hameldown [for Widecombe]; 8 miles Hameldown - Chagford; 11 miles Chagford - Drewsteignton; 4 miles

Two Moors Way (Drewsteignton - West Anstey)
Go back Distance: 36 miles Difficulty: Easy/Moderate End points: Drewsteignton (Grid Ref SX736908) West Anstey (Grid Ref SS853274)

This part of the Way crosses the quiet landscape of central Devon, a length giving the opportunity to experience a relatively remote pastoral landscape, a feeling of being far from the modern world. For most of the way the rim of Dartmoor to the south or Exmoor to the north, and often, both, frame the long-distance views. The Way meanders across a landscape of small hedged fields, secretive wooded valleys and high exhilarating pastures, each following the other unpredictably until open moorland is reached at the edge of Exmoor. Drewsteignton - Morchard Bishop;16 miles Morchard Bishop - Witheridge; 8 miles Witheridge - Knowstone; 8 miles Knowstone - West Anstey; 4 miles
